Moving Coil

Moving coil microphones are specialists for loud sound sources. In front of the guitar amp, the Sennheiser models MD421 and MD409 and the Shure models SM57 and SM7B have become established as the standard microphones. In front of the bass amp, many engineers prefer the Electro-Voice RE20 or the Beyerdynamic M88.

Also for drum recording moving coil microphones are heavily used. For the recording of the bass drum (AKG D12 and D112, Electro-Voice RE20, Beyerdynamic M88), the snare (Beyerdynamic M201, Shure SM57, Sennheiser MD441) or the Toms (Sennheiser MD421)  sound engineers like to use dynamic microphones. Although the Neumann KM84 small diaphragm condenser microphone is the professional standard for recording the hi-hat, there are also useful alternatives among the dynamic microphones as the Sennheiser MD441 and the Beyerdynamic M201.

If vocal recordings do not really need the fine resolution and the detail of a condenser microphone (for example with loud rock vocals), you can use dynamic microphones here as well. We mainly rent the Shure SM7B, the Sennheiser MD441 and the Beyerdynamic M88 for this application.
